Muiterij Kantje Boord – Mutiny “Close to the Wind…”

Our shanty choir Muiterij Kantje Boord (“Mutiny Close to the Wind…”) was established in Dussen in 1998. From the very beginning the members have felt a strong connection to the water, the sea and the sailor’s life. Images of its beauty, romance and drama have been related in many a song, often for two or three voices and both in Dutch and in a foreign tongue.

In our rather short history the choir has made its mark in Brabant (in the south of The Netherlands) and far beyond. Next to two fantastic CD’s, the mutineers have released a unique live CD together with neighbouring and befriended choirs.
Live performances fit us like a glove! Whenever we perform we strive for that warm and special spark to jump over to the audience. We were extremely successful at Sail Amsterdam, Dordt in Stoom (Dordt in Steam), Den Bosch Maritiem (Den Bosch Maritime), the Havendagen (Harbour Days) in Rotterdam., Europa Cantat Utrecht but we also enjoy recognition in Tulcea in Romania, where we have been invited to participate in great shows for two consecutive years now. In competitions with other shanty choirs Muiterij Kantje Boord has won important (first) prizes: twice in Grou (Friesland), Raamsdonksveer and Woudrichem and once in Wijk bij Duurstede.

We owe our success to the mixture of quality and Dutch ‘gezelligheid’. The latter does not easily translate but it is a feeling of belonging, being together and having a good time, a feeling of cosiness, which we share with our audience.
The quality is kept up to standard by our professionally educated conductor, Jacobijn Wallis from Breda. We are accompanied by three accordionists and a banjo player. Next to our weekly practice sessions we take part in master classes to enhance our many-sided talents and all-round abilities. In April 2008 we participated in two master classes in Ireland.
Being a close circle of friends, we celebrate our successes enthusiastically but we never forget the relativity of life. We stick together through thick and thin, so to speak! It is this feeling that is felt so strongly by the audience and that creates the bond with them. The atmosphere at our concerts is one of friendship and camaraderie.
